We are pleased to provide you with the first Media Measurement report with audience statistics on Top TV Stations and Top Radio Stations for Quarter 2 2017 in Ethiopia, where the GeoPoll Media Measurement service is currently available. Media Measurement was launched in Ethiopia inFebruary 2017. GeoPoll is currently the only daily and independent media measurement service in this country.

Radio

GeoPoll has analyzed the top 10 radio stations at regional level in Addis Abeba-Ethiopia for Q2 2017 using the daily data collected through its Media Measurement Service. Both ratings and share for the top stations in Addis Abeba-Ethiopia are examined.

The below chart shows the average ratings for the top stations in Addis Abeba-Ethiopia throughout the day.

In Addis Abeba region in Ethiopia, Sheger radio station is consistently leading in ratings throughout the day followed by Bisrat except between 6-8AM where FBC (Fana) takes the second position in ratings. The highest Sheger ratings are between 4-6PM with an average of 10.22.

GeoPoll also took into account the average share for Q2 2017 in Addis Abeba-Ethiopia:

Sheger achieves the top spot with an audience share of 26% followed by Bisrat (21.6%) and FBC (Fana) (13.6%). Zami is the fourth in audience share in Addis Abeba Ethiopia.

Radio: Oromia
GeoPoll has analyzed the top 10 radio stations at regional level in Oromia- Ethiopia for Q2 2017 using the daily data collected through its Media Measurement Service. Both ratings and share for the top stations in Oromia-Ethiopia are examined.

The below chart shows the average ratings for the top stations in Oromia- Ethiopia throughout the day.

FBC (Fana) consistently leads in ratings throughout the day in Oromia-Ethiopia except between 8-10PM where EBC FM Addis 97.1 takes the lead with an average of 4.92. FBC (Fana) has its highest ratings between 6-8AM with an average of 7.77.

GeoPoll also took into account the average share for Q2 2017 in Oromia- Ethiopia:

The table indicates that FBC (Fana) has the highest share of 16.7% followed by EBC FM Addis 97.1 and Oromia Radio with an average share of 14.3% and 11.9% respectively. Bisrat is the fourth with a share of 10.2%.

Television

GeoPoll has analyzed the top 10 TV stations at the national level in Ethiopia for Q2 2017 using the daily data collected through its Media Measurement Service. Both ratings and share for the top stations in Ethiopia are examined.

The chart below shows the average ratings for the top 10 stations in Ethiopia during peak hours i.e. from 19:00 to 21:30.

Kana TV station in Ethiopia tends to have more ratings during peak hours as compared to other TV stations. Its highest spot lies around 8PM with an average of 12.22. There is a stiff competition for the second position in ratings between EBS and EBC1. EBC1 has a strong showing in ratings at 8PM with the clear second position, while EBS performs best from 9-10PM with an average rating of 5.9.

GeoPoll also examined average share across the entire day during Q2, 2017.

Kana TV station has the highest audience share of 31.1% in Q2, followed by EBS with an audience share of 17.6%. EBC1 achieves the third spot followed by JTV.

Terms defined:
Share = The proportion watching a station, out of all of those watching at that time. For example, Station1 / (People Using TV) = 10/40 = 25%
Rating= The proportion watching a station out of total sample at that time multiplied by 100. For example, 100*Station1/Sample Size = 100 * 10 / 80 = 12.5.
